Privacy on the Internet is an Mirage’: Aussie Youth Indicted Regarding Alleged Active Shooter False Report in United States

A teenager from NSW has been formally accused following accusations he placing numerous hoax reports to first responders – a tactic known as “swatting calls” – wrongly stating gun violence incidents were happening at large commercial and universities throughout the US.

Global Probe Culminates in Arrest

Australian authorities formally accused the young male on the 18th of December. Officials state he is a member of an alleged loosely organised internet-based network of offenders concealed by keyboards in order to initiate an “immediate and large-scale police response”.

“Frequently teenage boys between the ages of 11 to 25, are engaging in offenses including swatting calls, doxxing and cyber attacks to achieve status, infamy and acknowledgement in their internet circles.”

In connection with the case, officers seized multiple computers and phones and a banned gun found in the young person’s home. This seizure was executed by Taskforce Pompilid formed in October 2025.

Officials Deliver a Strong Caution

Graeme Marshall, issuing a warning, warned that those operating under the illusion they can break the law from behind a computer and encrypted identities should be warned.

The AFP stated it began its probe upon receiving information from the FBI.

An FBI assistant director, from the FBI's international wing, remarked that the “risky and disturbing act” of false reports threatened public safety and consumed vital first responder resources.

“This investigation demonstrates that secrecy on the internet is an illusion,” he said in a joint statement alongside Australian police.

He added, “We are committed to partnering with international partners, our global allies, and private sector partners to identify and bring to justice individuals that exploit the internet to cause harm to communities.”

Legal Proceedings

The teenager has been indicted on 12 counts of telecommunications offences and an additional charge of unlawful ownership of a banned gun. He potentially faces up to fourteen years in a correctional facility.

“The AFP’s commitment (is|remains) to stopping the harm and anguish participants of these digital criminal groups are inflicting on the public, under the mistaken belief they are untraceable,” the official concluded.

The youth was scheduled to appear in a NSW juvenile court on this week.
