A trio of officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and another man who escaped subsequent to the blast was located not long after. The trio have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area displayed the building reduced to a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the property was subject to an court order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings triggered the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The official believed the blast had occurred on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told reporters, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
