Biden Bowl, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of unwanted presents might be viewed as a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Sale

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be sold via competitive bidding by a Italian fine art auction house. The specific date has not been finalized, although the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds donated to non-profit organizations.

Storage Room Collection

These gifts reportedly locked away in a repository on the third floor of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been gathering dust over a long period.

The detailed catalog has not yet been officially released, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The question raised whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.

A Global Assortment of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Various other items including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mainly from her allies, with building relationships with international counterparts and making Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.

This unique auction symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the state presents that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
